I made a board book for my son

After noticing how many “opposites” books were rooted in things most kids rarely encounter (Giraffes are tall, the Moon is far) I found myself wishing we had one full of the stuff from his every day world.

Stuff around the house. His stuffed elephant is soft. The stairs to our apartment he walks up and down everyday are hard. The cat in the window we see / sometimes don’t see on our walk to get bagels.

After several Illustrator and Procreate tutorials and an undisclosed amount of hours staring at our bath faucet, I was off to the races.

I gave Emerson the book as a surprise on his 2nd birthday.

It cemented “Bicycle/Motorcycle Voice” as our go-to family for controlling the volume of our voices when excited. He started asking me why CTA buses on the street didn’t have pretzels and bananas on them. We hypothesized about where those airplanes are goin over there.

Mission accomplished. It’s been in the rotation ever since.

I intend to print more copies, without “By Dada” on the front and a Happy Birthday message on the back.
